Virtual Town and Gown Literary Discussion Group: "Havoc"

Virtual Town and Gown Literary Discussion Group: “Havoc”

Wednesday, May 14

7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

This month, we will be reading Havoc by Christopher Bollen. Get the book at the Library!

Register with sbramble@dobbsferrylibrary.org to get the Zoom link — please indicate the title and date of the program you are registering for!

The war between age and youth has never been so vicious.

Eighty-one-year-old widow Maggie Burkhardt came to the Royal Karnak to escape. But not in quite the same way as most other guests who are relaxing at this threadbare luxury hotel on the banks of the Nile. Maggie, a compulsive fixer of other people’s lives, may have found herself in hot water at her last hotel in Switzerland and just might have needed to get out of there fast… But here at the Royal Karnak, under the hot Saharan sun, she has a comfortable suite, a loyal confidante in the hotel manager, Ahmed, and a handful of sympathetic friends, similar “long-termers” who understand her still-vivid grief for her late husband, Peter. Here, she is merely the sweet old lady in Room 309.

One morning, however, Maggie notices a new arrival at check-in: a mournful-looking young mother named Tess and her impish eight-year-old, Otto. Eager to help, Maggie invites them into her world. But it isn’t long before Maggie realizes that in her longing to be a part of their family, she has let in an enemy much stronger than she bargained for. In scrawny, homely Otto, Maggie Burkhardt has finally met her match.

Reader’s Circle: “Tomorrow There Will be Apricots”

Meet at the Waterfront, Weather Permitting!

This month, we will be reading Tomorrow There Will be Apricots by Jessica Soffer. Get the book at the Library!

Register with reference@dobbsferrylibrary.org — please indicate the title and date of the program you are registering for!

“Lorca spends her life poring over cookbooks, making croissants and chocolat chaud, seeking out rare ingredients, all to earn the love of her distracted chef of a mother, who is now packing her off to boarding school. In one last effort to prove herself indispensable, Lorca resolves to track down the recipe for her mother’s ideal meal, an obscure Middle Eastern dish called masgouf.

Victoria, grappling with her husband’s death, has been dreaming of the daughter they gave up forty years ago. An Iraqi Jewish immigrant who used to run a restaurant, she starts teaching cooking lessons; Lorca signs up.

Together, they make cardamom pistachio cookies, baklava, kubba with squash. They also begin to suspect they are connected by more than their love of food. Soon, though, they must reckon with the past, the future, and the truth–whatever it might be. Bukra fil mish mish, the Arabic saying goes. Tomorrow, apricots may bloom.”

Virtual Program: Creating a Compelling College Application

Virtual Program: Creating a Compelling College Application

Wednesday, May 21

7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

We are offering this Zoom presentation to help high school juniors and their parents understand how to use the upcoming summer productively to create a compelling college application.

We will cover the college application process including current admissions trends, writing the personal statement essay and supplemental essays, teacher recommendations and how students can position themselves to increase their chances for admission.

We’ll discuss how a student’s ability to express their insights, experiences and personal growth through their application essays are more important than ever before.

We will discuss application strategies including the advantages and disadvantages of early decision, early action and regular decision. We’ll review what factors students should consider in deciding whether or not to submit their standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) for test-optional colleges and universities. We’ll also discuss the different ways that students can be admitted to a particular school.

We’ll examine the holistic admissions review process, what admissions officers consider important when they review applicants, and how students can position themselves to develop a compelling narrative to increase their chances for admission.

We will also discuss the importance of community service, how it can provide an opportunity for personal growth and an opportunity to showcase a student’s character. Admissions officers place great emphasis on a student’s character and how the student has been able to give back and help others.

This program is a detailed and strategic overview of what students should focus on to make their college applications compelling.

Registration is required; register here.

The presentation will be led by Ron Feuchs and Jackie Tepper, partners at Stand Out For College, LLC.
