Stuffed Animal Field Trips – Ongoing from the Children’s Room

The library’s stuffed animals want to go on field trips! Check one out, bring them home, and add to their personal scrapbooks by writing about and taking pictures of the fun things you do together. When you’re at the library, you can visit the animals who have made it back to home base and see what they’ve been up to. Stuffed animals may be periodically rotated out based on condition.

2024 Children’s Summer Reading Game (June 26 to August 16)

Kids ages 3 to 12 are eligible for our children’s summer reading game. This page will tell you everything you need to know about participating – Kids below the age of 3 are encouraged to sign up for our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge.
Two Ways to Participate:
Track the Time You Spend Reading This Summer
1. Use our online log at ReadSquared to set a goal for yourself and earn prizes!
2. Sign up for an account at https://dobbsny03.readsquared.com/
3. Set a goal for how much you’d like to read. The minimum goal is 5 hours over the course of the summer.
4. Read! For every minute you read and log, you get 1 point.
5. (optional) Attend programs! For every program you attend and log, you get 75 points. See our calendar for the full list of programs.
6. For every 10% of your goal that you reach, you get a prize from the treasure chest! Readers who complete their goal will get a free book from our book sale at the end of the summer.
Enter the Choose Your Own Adventure Reading Challenge
1. Pick up or print a Choose Your Own Adventure Reading Map (link coming soon).
2. Follow a path on the map, reading a book of any format in each designated category as you travel across the island.
3. Earn an activity kit or toy by forging a path less than 15 spaces long; earn an extra free book for paths longer than 15 spaces.

Baby Songs & Stories

For parents and caregivers of babies up to 24 months.
Join children’s librarian Gina to learn songs, fingerplays, and more that you can do with your baby. Each meeting will leave time for open discussion and connection with other parents/caregivers.

Table Top Role-Playing Game Tasting Club (Registration)

Love D&D? Try out three other tabletop roleplaying games to explore new settings and mechanics. We will do two sessions each of Mausritter, Pirate Borg, and FIST.
You must be able to make it to both sessions of at least one game; please let us know what you prefer when you register. Due to space restrictions, we may only be able to place you in one of the three games.

- Mausritter: Inspirations: Redwall, The Secret of NIMH, Lord of the Rings. tep into the shoes of a brave little mouse and explore the great, big world! Use your wits and teamwork to survive dangerous challenges and defeat powerful foes. Survive long enough and you may become heroes of legend! If you are new to roleplaying games or D&D looks too complex, Mausritter is a great introduction for players of all ages.
- Pirate Borg: Inspirations: Pirates of the Caribbean, works of HP Lovecraft, The Secret of Monkey Island. Explore the undead-infested Dark Caribbean in search of treasure and infamy. Find treasure, bury it, and search for someone else’s hidden loot. Steal a ship, fight the British, and flee from the unknowable terrors of the deep. Be the filthy, greedy scoundrel you always wanted to be and live the pirate life!
- FIST: Inspirations: Your favorite action heroes, spy movies, and Saturday morning cartoons. Take on the role of a paranormal mercenary and fight the battles no one else can. As a member of the Freelance Infantry Strike Team, you can expect to: prevent an Alien plot to brainwash the planet, battle legions of laser dinosaurs from the future, and rescue the President from a space volcano lair (again). Use your brains, tools, and a near-infinite supply of cool sunglasses to defend the world!

Paws for Reading with Buddy (Registration)
Saturday, August 17

All Ages welcome.
Children read one-on-one with Buddy, a specially trained Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.) and his handler, Dobbs Ferry resident Marty Kanengiser. Children will select a book to read to Buddy before the program begins, and they will spend 10-15 minutes reading aloud. They are also welcome to ask questions about Buddy, a 12-year-old rescued black lab who loves children, other dogs, and reading.
