During the Civil War, Captain Robert Shaw – a white officer in the Union Army – is placed in command of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment; an all black unit. Battling prejudice and injustice from the Union military, Shaw leads the 54th on a suicide assault against a Confederate fort. Starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, and Morgan Freeman.
