Irish Music in America
Saturday, February 3
12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Irish Music has been around as long as almost any genre, and is as loved today as it was centuries ago. Spend some time with us as we explore and perform this glorious art.
In the olden days in Ireland, instrumentals were written and performed on traditional instruments like the fiddle and the tin whistle. In recent times and with Irish culture making its mark in the new world, Irish American Folk Music was born. They now live in symbiosis, and this event will explore both. We’ll speak of the fascinating history of the art form, tell related personal stories, and perform some of this wonderful music.
Together, we will have a wonderful time immersed in the beauty and history of Irish musical culture. Please join us!
Brian Conway is a master fiddler and author who is immersed in the traditional Irish tunes and was awarded the prestigious “All Ireland” championship. His reputation is international. Brian will open a window into traditional Irish music and its composers, and speak about and perform various tunes and styles.
Barry Wiesenfeld has performed on bass, flute, and vocals in Irish concerts in both the US and Ireland, and in venues as well-known as Carnegie Hall and The Garden State Art Center. He has accompanied or shared stages with The Chieftains, Tommy Makem, Carl Corcoran, James Keane, and many others. Besides singing and playing bass and flute, Barry will relate some behind the scenes stories of his experiences in this musical world.
Sheila Noonan, singer/songwriter, was raised in a home filled with music, and that music is in her genes. She’s the daughter of renowned Irish accordionist, the late Paddy Noonan, and has been on stages both in the US and internationally since she was a young girl. Sheil continues to entertain — with her own band, as a freelance vocalist, and now, joining her colleagues Barry and Brian in bringing Irish music and its history to new audiences.
